About The Democracy Kitchen
At The Democracy Kitchen, we're concocting reforms that strengthen the civic foundation of democracy by addressing critical issues plaguing its pillars.
We don't subscribe to the old adage about "too many cooks in the kitchen." The more inclusive, the better the outcome. Besides, at any home gathering, the kitchen always serves as the center of conversation and creation. We collaborate closely with state and local governments, public institutions, and local news organizations to identify and enable solutions for two key challenges both institutions face --transparency and public engagement-- to be effective, trusted, and relevant.
Our Founder
Daniel Bevarly is the visionary founder of The Democracy Kitchen. He brings a wealth of experience in public administration and civic engagement. His career spans the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, underscored by his work and his commitment to effecting positive changes in our democracy.
Previously, Dan served as the director of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, a prominent national nonprofit of state organizations that promote press freedom and open government reforms. This role, along with his past professional experiences as a government PIO, the managing director of a minority-owned PR firm, a public engagement director for a statewide Think Tank, and a business development director for an award-winning govtech civic engagement company was instrumental in his journey to solve challenges to our democracy's fundamental pillars. His challenge at The Democracy Kitchen surrounds reforms to restore and sustain a healthy, functioning democracy in government, journalism, and society.
